Delta City Drifters
Forming the divide between the Slate River’s north and south channels, Caris Island is flat, muddy and water-worn. It’s close-clustered, but low, since the threat of erosion and earthquakes means you can’t build anything tall here. No particular gang rules on the island, but there’s plenty of crime. The flood protection breaks down sometimes; not surprisingly, since upstream it’s extremely robust—a lot of extra water gets shunted downstream during the spring thaw. The Narrows have it worse, but ground-floor apartments on Caris Island are still pretty…affordable.
